Let go of the reins and let the team flourish
Karen McLellan needed to take less of a hands-on role as her firm expanded following a merger, but that meant doing something with her team that she’d never been very good at.
Growing a business means that owners often need to rethink their roles. McLellan, MD of accountancy firm Haines Watts Hereford, feels that personal development goes hand-in-hand with business development, and that her clients tell her much the same thing.
When staff are empowered, she said, it tends to result in a tight-knit team – “almost like your children, you see them blossoming under your care,” she said. “I’ve learned that you should bring in the best people you can and stay out of their way while they do what they do best.”
While this meant she had to face one of her biggest fears – namely letting go a little with her team – she now believes putting a management team in place and watching them blossom has been great for business.
