Tackling the UK’s productivity problem – together

Building mutually beneficial relationships is key for us to successfully achieve our ambition to solve the UK’s productivity problem.

When Sir Charlie Mayfield was first asked in 2015 to lead a business-led action group for productivity, his first step was to engage with some of Britain’s leading businesses.

These large organisations were joined by existing business support organisations including the CBI to create the The Productivity Leadership Group and together they started developing a new approach to solving the productivity puzzle.

These supportive partners have subsequently been joined by many others and between them have supplied mentors, opened their doors for industry visits, partnered on ambitious research projects, provided funding and helped develop innovative ways of helping SMEs adopt vital new technologies.

Now in 2019 there is an urgent need to turbo charge the productivity movement that we have started.

  • The UK has embarked on a second decade of productivity stagnation and we’ve seen three successive quarters of productivity decline
  • According to WEF league tables, Britain has now slipped to 8th place in global the competitiveness index
  • The political context is dire, not just the paralysis on Brexit but the prospect of a new government bringing an ill-informed analysis on how to solve this challenge

We believe that Be the Business is uniquely placed to be the catalyst and coordinator of a campaign for a more productive and competitive economy.

As such we are now galvanising business leaders to take action and lead a new campaign for a decade of UK productivity and competitiveness.

Our ask to them is that they:

  1. Take the lead – Commit to the productivity movement in new ways through your own business lines and operations
  2. Participate with peers – Help us to scale our winning programmes by offering your resources and expertise
  3. Support our campaign – Through cash or in kind contributions

If you would like more information on the campaign or partnerships more generally, and would like to find out how you or your organisation can get involved, please contact partnerships@bethebusiness.com.
